Portland, Maine — Commercial fishermen and maritime communities finally got relief from foreign green energy companies industrializing their coasts and natural resources.
President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the outer continental shelf from offshore wind development while ordering a review of leasing and permitting practices. As dutiful stewards of the ocean’s bounty, fishermen applaud these changes.
“It’s been a long time since fishermen have had hope for a future,” said NEFSA CEO Jerry Leeman. “We are grateful that the new administration is protecting our iconic, multi-generational trade from foreign energy companies and alphabet soup agencies destroying our way of life.”
“After four years of rushing leases and approvals to wind industry insiders, President Trump’s new directive will bring fairness and order to offshore wind development. Anyone committed to protecting our natural resources should welcome these changes.”
As NEFSA has previously explained, offshore wind development is beset with serious, unresolved environmental questions. The executive order identifies one of the most serious — navigational safety. Offshore wind farms skew and disrupt marine radar for reasons not yet understood, imperiling fishing crews who have already undertaken a dangerous profession.
Apart from immediate concerns like safety, NEFSA has also explained that offshore wind sites pose long term challenges. The new executive order confronts a principal problem, directing the Interior and Energy Departments and the Environmental Protection Agency to study the costs and environmental effects of defunct wind farms.
“President Trump declared the start of a new golden age for America in his inaugural address. We hope this administration heralds a new golden age for one of our nation’s oldest industries.”
